After sailing through three-quarters of this puzzle, I found myself stuck in the southwest corner, until several pennies dropped one after the other. Beam never ceases to challenge and amuse me at the same time. My runaway favourite clue is 27 across.

This great puzzle from Beam is laced with innuendo. Tuesday has not been a good day for Toughies recently, but this has been the best since Beam’s last offering four weeks ago.

Once again we have a Beam puzzle with cleverly concealed definitions and synonyms which stretch the imagination. This was a pleasure to solve, which is more than I can say for the previous couple of Tuesday Toughies.

A Game of Two Halves

I thought that the across clues today were pretty straightforward, but some of the down ones presented more of a problem. But all in all it’s a good puzzle with some excellent clues.

Fits and Starts

“Fits and starts” is a description of my progress with this puzzle. I started pretty well in the NW corner and then confidently wrote in “antiepileptic” for 7d, only to hit a brick wall later when I came to 18a and 23a. I eventually sorted that out and forged ahead again, but took ages for the final few answers in the NE corner. It was a very enjoyable challenge (with only two anagrams, which is a definite plus point for me).

Ray T’s second outing as a Toughie setter was quite enjoyable. Once you get used to the stretched definitions, the clues are straightforward if a bit tough.

Hardbeam or Quickbeam?

+ – + – + – + – + – + – + – +

BD Rating – Difficulty **Enjoyment ***

It’s a new setter today so I’d better be gentle! It was a perfectly acceptable puzzle with nothing that I couldn’t understand. I found to be rather easier than the average Toughie (or perhaps I’m just having a good day) and therefore a quickbeam.
