This is Elgar’s 141st Telegraph Toughie. What does that number mean to you? I was quite happy to be able to find the Nina and the answers that describe it, but only once I had completed the slow and satisfying solve. The observant among you will notice the grid is the same as that of the last Elgar (I know, I’m just showing off). Continue reading “Toughie 2373”

Happy New Year! I’ve only just returned from a lovely week in Phuket with my 15-year old daughter, and the jet lag is conducive to midnight blogging. A nice quirky puzzle from Sparks with some great oblique definitions.… Continue reading

Osmosis gives us yet another pangram (of course), but today’s puzzle has an additional gimmick which helped me a lot with the solve. I did need to look at the big red book occasionally.… Continue reading

Another amazing puzzle from Elgar. I managed to spot the theme quickly in 8a/11a and that helped enormously with the rest of the solve. It was harder to find the connection to 139 (this being Elgar’s 139th Telegraph Toughie) – I was briefly distracted by Genesis 13:9, but it turns out the link is elsewhere, as explained in Elgar’s words at the end of this blog.… Continue reading

Today’s theme is readily apparent, we have a grid filled with 9 examples (one hypothetical) of 4d’s 8d series. This is Elgar’s 138th telegraph toughie, and if you have not spotted the relevance of that number you may be forgiven, for it involves some poetic licence.… Continue reading

Ah, Sparks having fun again. A very enjoyable puzzle. There is a theme indicated by a Nina. How many did you count? I’m not super-keen on the reverse Polish notation (1d, 3d, 6d, 14d), but plenty to make up for that, and the theme always raises a smile.… Continue reading
