Sloggers and Betters XIV

+ – + – + – + – + – + – + – +

What? The 14th annual “Sloggers and Betters” gathering for crossword setters and blog contributors and readers will take place in London, following on, as in previous years, from the annual lunch for Times setters.  Start by looking in the Parliament bar (first door on the right) or just outside (depending on the weather) – fellow cruciverbalists are not hard to find.

When? 2:00pm onwards on Tuesday 15th May 2018.

London – meeting at the George, Borough High Street, Southwark, SE1 1NH

The George, Borough High Street, Southwark, SE1 1NH
And later? Anyone still standing will be heading towards a nearby restaurant.
Who? Anyone who is interested.
Why? It is hoped that most of the Times setters and several of the Telegraph, Guardian, Independent and FT setters will put in an appearance. There should also be a cross-section of bloggers and readers from this site, Times for the Times and Fifteensquared. This is your chance to meet us!
How? You can just turn up on the day, but feel free to indicate your intentions by leaving a comment.
If you’ve never been before, these are very friendly functions and you have the opportunity to meet other like-minded people.

  1. The date’s been in my diary for a while so I’ve already booked the day off and a ticket for an exhibition in the morning. Let’s hope the weather is as nice as it was last year.

  2. Just booked my train tickets. Won’t be able to stay on for the meal in the evening but it will be good to catch up with everyone during the afternoon.
Mini-BD gang meeting up for lunch in The George at 1pm if anyone wants to join us.

    1. Hi Jane & All, I aim to be there by about 3-ish; hopefully I’ll still see you and get the chance to say Hello?

  3. If Jane is coming, how could I possibly stay away?

(Mortgage? It seems I spent my house money on avocado toast, so may as well spend the change at The George…)

  4. As I have lurked and set a few Rookies for far too long without meeting any of you, I’ll do my best to pop in for an hour or two from 14.00. I have another engagement from 16.30 so regretfully cannot stay for the whole affair.

    1. That would be great – quite a few of us will only be there for the afternoon (trains to catch etc) but we’ll be making the most of the short time together!
I’m rather hoping that our new Crossword Editor may pop in to introduce himself as well – perhaps he’ll let us know before the day.
Look forward to meeting you, Kelotoph – you’ll recognise us all from the Rogues Gallery pics.

  5. Managed to get train tickets that are not too extortionate and what is probably a flea pit hotel down the Old Kent Road. Like CS I have a few galleries and museums to visit in the morning and on Wednesday but would love to put some more faces to names.
I was going to pop down to Derby on the 5th but it clashes with the Tour de Yorkshire which will fill my weekend. I look forward to meeting peeps in London.

  6. I know the George well and it is only about 15 minutes from where I work.
Would anyone still be there about 1700???

    1. I know that some of us will have to leave by about 18.00 but doubtless others will be staying later so do come and join us.

      1. I shall try to get along. Hopefully most of you will have been on the sauce all afternoon, so that will reduce you all to my level!!

        1. The sauce is a nice thought, Hoofit, but I’ve got to find my way back to Anglesey so perhaps not……..

          1. I have a soft spot for Anglesey, I once spent a week volunteering for the RSPB at South Stack.
That’s a journey and a half you have to get home!!

            1. Good for you, Hoofit. There’s trouble up at South Stack presently as the RSPB have decided to charge for using the car park – given the local papers something to talk about for weeks!

I was a volunteer over at the tern colony in Cemlyn – other side of the ‘mountain’.

              1. Don’t get me started on the RSPB, I am no longer a member as I resigned when they refused to help in protecting my local patch, Beddington Farmlands. It now has an incinerator in the middle of it.
I went to Cemlyn, I was amazed. There was someone there all night protecting the young from Kestrels. Now that’s dedication.

  7. Depending on where I am working i may be able to pop by later. I suspect I am either down Old Bailey or the Adelphi building at Charing Cross.

  8. Hope to be there in the afternoon, but am hosting Go club in Stevenage from 7.30pm, so it will depend on making an earlier start than the one that saw me arriving at the Birthday Bash at 5pm!

      1. Yes, I live in Stevenage. I’m expecting to get the train to Kings X then cycle to the George. What about you?

        1. I’m in Datchworth. I will be travelling from Knebworth, but have people to meet on the way and afterwards, but it would be nice to meet at the George if possible.

          1. I’m sure BD will be able to introduce us if I can make it, as I hope to. Look forward to seeing you there.
