DDoS

Probably as revenge because I have deleted routines that were sending out spam emails on 5-6 occasions, the site has been suffering a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) for most of the day.  I have transferred the site to Cloudflare, and I am hoping that normal service will be resumed soon.

Miffypops’ blog has been ready to post since this morning and will added  when the site is more responsive. [Added at 11:50 pm]

  1. Perhaps the time has come to make the site membership only. Don’t know if that would help but it can’t do any harm. Membership on application. Just a thought.

    1. Somehow I don’t think that would help as each request would have to be serviced before being rejected and that was what caused the problem. Over 500 ip addresses were blocked in the first hour of the attack. I find it quite amusing to think that people’s toasters and fridges from all over the world are trying to access the blog.

  2. When I hear of people making excuses for hackers, like he / she has Asperger’s is so and so, it makes me so mad, well if that is the case do not let them near the computer, if that is their only enjoyment get them some work to do, have people nothing better to do?

  3. I see in the comments for today’s offering that “You announced on Facebook” that there were problems. How do we join this group to see such messages?

  4. I really appreciate this blog, and though I only found it recently it is now required daily reading.

Living out in the wilds as we do here, we only get about 3 DTs a week, so if I don’t manage to complete the crossword I often never find out what I should have done, so it is wonderful to find help, entertainment and so much food for thought! It was quite traumatic to lose it on the occasions when it was attacked.

I applaud your patience in getting through the past week or two, it can’t have been easy.

    1. You can get the DT puzzles on line , for a relatively small sum, around 32 euro so slightly less in sterling annually or for a larger layout , if you want the full paper on line , I think I saw an ad offering a Samsung Galaxy tablet to new subscribers, https://www.google.ie/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwiYyMDwisfQAhVLK8AKHeaWArsQFggaMAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dailytelegraph.com.au%2Fnews%2Fnsw%2Fthe-daily-telegraph-subscription-offer-get-a-brand-new-samsung-galaxy-tablet%2Fnews-story%2Fa25df249226a47a923d7820902207aa9&usg=AFQjCNFQ-bPGG0ljk1ftolPcUuu5E9nQkg&sig2=T19i4Y5zMBJ214kOcnN20Q

      1. Thank you for the advice.

I know about the DT online, but sheer b****ymindedness prevents me from subscribing. It goes back to when we lived in Belgium and paid a small fortune for the paper, which often failed to arrive or perhaps it did come without a lot of the bits. Then they told me, in a cheery ‘1984’ fashion, that it was a really good deal and I’d have to pay to get the crossword on line. I was, by that stage, more than peeved and decided I’d have nothing to do with it. I know this comes under the heading of biting off my own nose, etc. but I now ration myself to the cryptic one day, the Toughie the next and the Sudokus etc if we still can’t get into town. In truth, I only have time to do one a day, so it could be worse, but it was so nice to find this site. There are days when I can’t seem to translate the clues from what seems to be Chinese and to find hints which show me how I should realign my thinking to clear my view is just perfect.

        Thanks all round.
