For those who complained about yesterday’s Toughie being too easy, here is what you wished for (in trumps). This is Elgar at his most devious, and if you solved it without seeking out the handful of easier answers and building out from there then perhaps you ought to be setting rather than solving!

Morning All!. A reasonable Saturday puzzle from the Mysteron I thought. Thanks to crypticsue for covering while I was in Spain.

This must be the most straightforward Toughie that I have ever solved

As guessed earlier in the week by a number of contributors, today’s setter is Ray T. Two-star difficulty for those who, like me, love his puzzles and four-star for the rest!

The usual entertaining start to Sunday morning – Virgilius puzzles are definitely the highlight of my solving week. My top favourites this time were 10a, 27a, and 16d.

This has all the trademarks of Beam or Ray T – short clues, all single-word answers, mention of Queen, a sprinkling of innuendo and (a fairly recent idiosyncrasy) no anagrams at all. It all adds up to a very entertaining puzzle.

At the end, I was held back by 3 of the longer answers, so I’ll rate this a 2.5* for difficulty and 3* for enjoyment. Thanks to Jay.
