Sloggers and Betters 9

+ – + – + – + – + – + – + – +

What? The 9th annual “Sloggers and Betters” gathering for crossword setters and blog contributors and readers will take place in London, following on, as in previous years, from the annual lunch for Times setters.

When? 4:00pm onwards on Thursday 23rd May 2013.

Where?

London – meeting at the The Town of Ramsgate, Wapping

The Town of Ramsgate, 62 Wapping High Street, London, E1W 2PN

And later? Anyone still standing will be heading towards a nearby restaurant.

Who? Anyone who is interested.

Why? It is hoped that most of the Times setters and several of the Telegraph, Guardian, Independent and FT setters will put in an appearance.  There should also be a cross-section of bloggers and readers from this site, Times for the Times and Fifteensquared.  This is your chance to meet us!

How? You can just turn up on the day, but feel free to indicate your intentions by leaving a comment.

If you’ve never been before, these are very friendly functions and you have the opportunity to meet other like-minded people.

  1. I would love to but mid week evenings are a bit tricky so not this time. I hope everyone who can get there enjoys it as much as usual.

  2. Pending approval from the babysitter I very much hope to join you if he gets home from work early enough!

  3. I regret that I will not be attending this after-lunch meeting, but I will be celebrating 50 years in crosswords next Monday (20 May) at The Kings Arms, Broad Street., central Oxford at 7 pm. Anyone near Oxford (or further afield!) is welcome to pop in. A notice put up on this site by Peter Biddlecombe has self-destructed, it seems. Please let me know if you are likely to come (my email address is on the Crossword Centre website). Greetings to all.

    • I suspect that it may have been removed given that derogatory remarks about the site and some of the personnel associated with the blog seem to be in the memory after last year’s event.

Strikes me as being a bit hypocritical to use the said blog for publicity.

    • By the way, it didn’t self-destruct. It was deleted as it was posted without prior consent. This followed a weekend at which several of my friends were greatly offended by remarks made by someone who should have known a lot better.

I shall not be attending this event. [The Oxford event, that is – I hope to be in London.]

  4. Hmm, other than the fact I appeared to have lost my Oyster card, appears to be no excuses to not turn up. I’ll be lurking, just as I do on this blog.

    Paul.

  5. Well, a great evening was had by all. It was hard to tell who was a Better and who was a Slogger :-) thanks to Big Dave for organising.

  6. I had a great time (my first ever crossword-based social event!) so thank you all who made me feel so welcome.

Our brainstorming to try and think of powerful/intellectually organised Matthews in history last night may have resulted in an overly scary username for this site, mind you…

  7. Sorry to have missed you all due to a bout of flu. Sounds like a good night was had by all having spoken to CS. I’m also missing a rather good gig that is scheduled for tonight.

  8. Well, that was fun! Many thanks to BD for the invite – it was a pleasure to be able to buy you a pint of the brown hoppy stuff, and I’ll look forward to being able to do the same again some time …
