Welcome to the first holiday weekend of the year and we are treated to a splendid Toughie by Micawber who for me if one of the finest of the new setters on the block. Our genial setter produces lovely clues, some with a topical bias and some that make you smile. Quite a few cryptic definitions in today’s puzzle, so a little thinking outside your Easter egg box may be required.

Possibly the Best Puzzle of the Week once again, thank you Virgilius – all the usual ‘trademarks’ but this time with the added bonus of a date-related theme!

Gazza very kindly offered the ‘weekend’ bloggers the chance to do an on-the-day blog today and as the two gentlemen had prior engagements, I took up the challenge of the Good Friday Giovanni puzzle for the second year running. Giovanni normally gives us a religious clue or two, but the nearest I can find is 19a which always makes me think of Biblical retributions. Not sure what Gazza would think about the anagram count, but I didn’t really notice until I came to do my notes for the review!

Looking back I don’t think that I commented on the day as I think that I was working. I got to this late but still found it a good test for a Saturday puzzle.
