Sloggers and Betters 7

What? The 7th annual “Sloggers and Betters” gathering for crossword setters and blog contributors and readers will take place in London, following on, as last year, from the annual lunch for Times setters.

When? 4 pm onwards on Tuesday 24th May 2011

Where?

London – meeting at the Ship & Shovell, Charing Cross

The Ship & Shovell, 2-3 Craven Passage, Charing Cross, London, WC2N 5PH

And later? Anyone still standing will be heading towards Chinatown.

Who? Anyone who is interested

Why? It is hoped that most of the Times setters and several of the Telegraph, Guardian, Independent and FT setters will put in an appearance.  There should also be a cross-section of bloggers and readers from this site, Times for the Times and Fifteensquared.  This is your chance to meet us!

How? Although you can just turn up on the day, so that we have some idea of the numbers likely to attend, please indicate by leaving a comment or writing to me using the form below [applications are now closed].

If you’ve never been before, these are very friendly functions and you have the opportunity to meet other like-minded people.

 Update

Update on plans (received from Jane Teather / Jetdoc) “Directions for getting to The Ship & Shovell: from Charing Cross tube station, take Exit 2, for Villiers Street. Walk a few yards down Villiers Street and turn right, down The Arches (the sign says ‘leading to Craven Passage’). The pub is at the top of the steps, at the end of that passageway. There are two entrances, to the left and right of the passage.”We have negotiated a deal with the manager to use the upstairs room, which is called The Crow’s Nest. It is above the left-hand bar, which opens at 5:00. If you arrive between 4:00 and 5:00, you will find me (Jane), and possibly John and others, in the right-hand bar.

“A condition of using the room is a minimum spend of £200. John has already used his card to guarantee £50 upfront. So — to be sure that all our spending counts towards that total — we suggest a ‘whip’ arrangement: £20 for people staying a while; £10 for people just dropping in and/or not drinking much. At least at the beginning of the evening, I (Jane) will be whip-mistress. From 5:00, I will be in the left-hand bar, wielding my lash.

“We anticipate leaving the pub to head for a restaurant at about 8:00–8:30.”

There was initial confusion over whether this was the 8th or 9th meeting, but it has been decided that only London meetings are to be counted.
