This puzzle from Shamus is very pleasant, but lacks the usual teeth of a Friday Toughie. Although a few of the constructs are a little harder than those found in a regular cryptic, this should be within the scope of the average solver.

Being a relative newcomer to the world of the Sunday Telegraph Cryptic, it always takes me quite a few clues to get into the mind of Virgilius. As usual, it was well worth the effort as this was a great crossword which seemed to be enjoyed by all on the day.

It felt a bit like being back at school doing “double science” today, but, as usual with Giovanni, the wordplay clearly points you to the answer (although I wasn’t too sure what some of the answers meant, even after consulting the dictionary!). In spite of that I did find it enjoyable – let us know what you thought of it in a comment.
To reveal an answer just highlight the space between the brackets under the clue.
