Not the Saturday Prize Puzzle – 048

A Puzzle by Qix

+ – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – +

Welcome to the forty eighth in our series of weekly puzzles.

Qix joined us as a regular a few weeks back, but how many of you knew that he sets crosswords for the Glasgow Herald?  Today he has set one especially for us.  Ignore the dreadful grid and you should find this to be a very enjoyable puzzle.

  1. Many thanks to Qix for an enjoyable crossword (triple unches though). I will try and get a review up later.

  2. Very enjoyable once I had finished struggling with the NW corner though now I have finished, I can’t see why.

    Thank you Qix

  3. I agree with crypticsue and don’t really understand 9a and 7d. 4d took a fair while to spot and it only just works IMHO.
    Favourites 22a, 26a and 28a.
As a player I quite liked the bridge references – 5 I think in all?
    Nice puzzle so thanks Qix.

    1. 9a is UDA (loyalists) + P (quiet) inside BEST (overcome),
      7d sounds like (reportedly) DUCKS.

      1. Thanks for 9a. I’d twigged the p for quiet but the rest? I’d not have worked that out in a month of Sundays! Completely forgotten about the UDA!
As for 7d, I must be losing the plot not to have seen that! Might have to apply for entry to the CC if I carry on.

  4. Thanks for all the comments.

4D is a bit of a stretch for a homophone, but I thought that “Sort of sounds like…” summed it up OK.

The clues in this one are a little terse – IIRC I’d just finished solving a Times crossword when I wrote it, one that was seriously verbose, so it was probably a bit of a reaction against that, and some of the clues could have been more creative.
