Selected hints by Big Dave

BD Rating – Difficulty *** Enjoyment ****

Last week I asked for more of the same, and Jed has done just that.  I found it a little easier than last weeks puzzle, but just as enjoyable.

A full analysis of this puzzle will be available at 12.00 next Friday, 10th July.

1a Piece of cleaning equipment Charlie returned to a hospital (6)
This bathroom item comes from a proper Charlie reversed followed by A H (a Hospital)

11a Crucial encounter, later sorted out in court (8)
The site of a famous battle is an anagram of LATER inside a word meaning to court

19a Book author pronounced more intelligent (8)
Combine B(ook) and a word that sounds like a synonym for an author and you get a word meaning more intelligent

20a Thing possibly taken by king (6)
An all-in-one clue about a piece that may be taken by the king in a game of chess

2d Dramatic work, high point for one working in theatre (8)
A delightful charade of a dramatic musical work and a high point of land and you have one working in theatre, or come to that, in a factory

3d Where David is barely visible for girl (8)
The Italian city that has a naked statue of David

5d Place for public hangings in London square (8,7)
Where pictures, not people, are hung on the North side of Trafalgar Square

16d It’s not allowed in the Book of Numbers (8)
Nothing to do with the Bible – not in the telephone directory

19d Intelligence about a hot spot in the Middle East (7)
Put a synonym for intelligence around A H(ot) and you get a spot in the Middle East

Another excellent puzzle, worth the price of the Sunday newspaper all on its own.

  1. A good Sunday crossword, 11a as in your hints a v. good clue, but as much as I dislike the use of names, 3d has to be my pick of the day, with the David in yesterday’s crossword leading me off in the wrong direction.

  2. Dave, many hours ago, I sent a simple email to Gazza…
    Me: Superb
    Gazza: Agree
An excellent piece of work – best of the week
