Edition 9

+ – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – +

This edition concerns only a small, but important, minority – those brave souls who tackle the Enigmatic Variations in the Sunday Telegraph Seven supplement, or rather those who use the online version rather than the version in the supplement.

The online version of EV No. 853: Deepest Affections by Kruger is missing some key information.

There is also a small problem with the version printed in the newspaper.

Rollo reports:

The online version preamble says:
“Clues are given in alphabetical order of their answers which must be entered wherever they will fit.  When rearranged into conventional order, these clues will initially provide the solver with instructions.  Chambers (2003) is recommended except for two proper nouns.”

Whereas the preamble in the printed version says:
“Clues are given in alphabetical order of their answers which must be entered wherever they will fit.  When rearranged into conventional order, these clues will initially provide the solver with instructions.  To demonstrate complete understanding of the theme, they then should express DEEPEST AFFECTIONS in three words below the grid.  Chambers (2003) is recommended except for two proper nouns.”

The sentence which is highlighted above is the one which is missing.

Also, as reported on another forum, there appears to be an error in the version printed in the newspaper:
There is a bar missing from above the 4th letter of 46a.  This can be verified by checking the lack of symmetry in the grid.

Applicable to both versions:
When EV compilers ask for something to be written below the grid, a line is drawn on which to write the answer.  This has not been done.
