DT 25795

Daily Telegraph Cryptic 25795 – 9 Dec 08

+ – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – +

Here are some answers for starters. Pushed for time (yes, I actually have to do some work and attend a meeting) More later. I promise.

12 Across – Drunk often indicates anagram – Sot appears too drunk = propose a toast.

15 Across – Unfortunately also denotes anagram – no trace – put around South = S. No trace S = ancestor

19 Across – Another anagram – ammo is = mimosa.

25 Across – Build the word – English = E. Mine = pit. A. P. Herbert = APH. Epitaph.

27 Across – Tear-jerker.

11 Down – It’s a double meaning – In the Pipeline.

20 Down – Another double meaning – On track.

23 Down – hidden word clue. Look inside digest horus and you’ll find ‘thor’.

Addendum:

I hoped to have more time to look at today’s crossword, but only managed to do a few more…

2 Down – Remembering the answer usually mean the first or last word, so this one will mean ‘Sad’ or ‘dwarf’.  ’A’ in paris is ‘un’. One of the seven dwarves (dwarfs if you’re into Tolkein) is happy. Un-happy.

7 Down – A ton is A T. A large area of land is a ‘tract’. Pull is At-tract.

And two rather elegantly simple clues (which are often hardest to get)

18 Down – Further loan is ‘advance’.

22 Across – Notice plug is ‘advertisement’.

I’ve run out of time, sadly. Others may want to leave comments with solutions which I’ve missed.

Will do better tomorrow.

  1. I’ve got them all (I think) except 26 Across, which is really irritating me…

  3. Got them all now too, but 1 across, 14 across and 3 down had me thinking!
